American Book of the Dead: La Victoire de Sans-Une-Trace
Plaster, steel, mirror, copper, gold, grinder mechanism
46″ × 24″ × 70″
The Winged Victory (Nike) of Samothrace has been re-named and reconfigured to address the existential comingling of victory with death, as well as to elevate the idea of victory over death to a philosophic consideration. The interactive element in this piece is a square mirror that spins as it reflects the visage of the one turning the crank. It references the Zen idea, ‘a clear mind is like the surface of a mirror, reflecting all movement without itself being disturbed’, a victory over death.
